Joseph Healy Advocates Psychedelic Therapy for Mental Health Reform
15 May 2025
Last month, Joseph Healy spent seven weeks touring cutting-edge mental-health facilities across Scandinavia and the Netherlands, immersing himself in innovative care models that prioritise human connection alongside medical rigour.
In Rotterdam, he volunteered for a supervised psilocybin-assisted therapy session, ingesting a “High Hawaiian” truffle brew for five hours. Healy emerged from vivid hallucinations and deep emotional introspection, even envisioning a moving reunion with his late son George.
Post-session, clinicians described him as “high-functioning,” yet encouraged him to be more emotionally open. Healy’s follow-up involved almost 12 hours of sleep per day over two days, underscoring both the intensity and the therapeutic potential of the experience.
While the promise of psilocybin for treatment-resistant depression and anxiety is growing, Healy pointed out a stark accessibility gap: in Australia, a full course can cost around A$25,000 versus roughly A$5,000 in the Netherlands. He’s now advocating for regulated, affordable psychedelic-assisted care through Malu Health Group.
